Week 5 and the first phase of my Run Disney Wine & Dine Half Marathon Training is complete! Check out the lessons I learned this week and how I’m moving forward.
Today is officially my last day of summer vacation! Tomorrow, I report for duty for the 2017-2018 school year (at a new-to-me school) and this has been the fastest summer of my teaching career. It was also about three weeks shorter, so that probably had a lot of do with it. 😉 I tried to savor my last week off by avoiding responsibility, but still staying active. How did your week go?!
Sunday, 7/30/17:
Rest day! We drove back from Austin that morning, which is about a five hour drive for us.
Monday, 7/31/17:
The alarm came ridiculously early (4:30 a.m. actually) Monday morning. I eased back into my routine with an upper body workout. Instead of doing my run after the sun came up, I decided to wait until the afternoon so I can begin getting used to the split schedule I’ll be following during the school year. The weather through most of the day was perfect for a run. Overcast, not too hot, perfect! But, wouldn’t you know as soon as I decided to head out, the sun came out and the heat turned up. I was slow — I knew I would be — but I was still able to get in four miles.
Another early morning. I’m back to my pre-5 a.m. wake-up calls. Teacher Time comes early. I did a total body workout that hit hamstrings, glutes, quads, and back. I didn’t realize how heavily focused on lower body it was until I was in the thick of it!

Wednesday, 8/2/17:
Wednesday was one of those days in which my alarm went off at its scheduled time, but I didn’t want to move. I decided I wasn’t ready just yet for a pre-5 a.m. workout. I tried, but quickly crawled back in bed and slept for another hour. Sometimes your body just needs the sleep! After waking up, it took me around two hours to get motivated to do anything else. I did another total body workout that featured a lot of body weight moves. It wasn’t “gentle”, but I didn’t feel like I was beating my body up.
Wednesday afternoon, I headed out for a run. It was around 85 degrees, which is considerably cooler {I use that term loosely!} than it’s been recently. It was a much easier run than Monday, but it was still hot and the remnants of lotion on my arms and legs from my nail salon visit earlier in the day just exacerbated my sweat.😂
Thursday, 8/3/17:
Rest day. I got my haircut and that was about the most exciting thing that happened all day!
Friday, 8/4/17:
Long run day! Because last week’s third run was speed work, it was technically my first long run in two weeks, so I was nervous.
I headed out around 7:30 a.m. to get in my 7 miles. Overall, it was a fantastic run, though my paces were all over the place for a little while. I could feel my legs starting to get tight at the very end, so I was thankful for it to be over and proud that I finished with a 10:00 pace.

Saturday, 8/5/17:
It had been about two weeks since I was able to incorporate any yoga and my body was definitely craving it! I turned to YouTube for some Yoga With Adriene. She offers an entire playlist for yoga for runners, but I really love everything she does! She offers everything from short stretches to full length classes, so it’s easy to fit one of her videos into any schedule. I also like to use the Beachbody On Demand Yoga Studio to help get my yoga in!
Week 5 Miles: 14.75
Total Miles: 60.35
This week officially wrapped up the first “phase” of my training — meaning my schedule will be pretty different from here on out. If you missed any reports on the previous weeks, you can check them out below.
I hope you hang around the blog this week! I’ve got some fun stuff coming up, like talks about morning routines, back-to-school must haves, and summer beauty favorites! Tell me what’s up on your blog this week so I can be sure and stop by!
Question: Do you run in the mornings or the afternoons?
I’m linking up with HoHo Runs and Mississippi Piddlin for Weekly Wrap! I’m also linking up with Annmarie, Jen, and Nicole for Wild Workout Wednesday!

Sorry your summer is coming to an end, but have a great school year! I stopped teaching two years ago when we moved to Hong Kong. I definitely like feeling the it is perpetual summer and I can workout whenever I want 😉
Jessica says
So jealous!! I’ll get there someday–perpetual summer, ahhhh. 😉

I got my hair cut too this week. It just makes you feel good doesn’t it? Good luck getting back to school this week
Jessica says
Yes! Sometimes a girl just deserves to have someone else wash and style her hair, haha.

Great job this week! During the week, I have to run in the evenings. My alarm goes off at 4:45 to get ready for work and there is not way that I could get up any earlier for a workout. On the weekends though, the earlier the better! I love going out early to catch the best temps of the day.
I’ll have to check out that youtube channel for some new yoga routines!

I get up around 4:15 during the week and it’s definitely hard. My husband thinks anything before 5 a.m. is still the middle of the night!

Boo! for going back to school so early! Our summer is shorter than last year as we will be going back later this month too. We get out before Memorial day next year so i guess its a good trade off.
I talk a bit about Disney on the blog today and than after that, who knows. I don’t plan too far in advance..haha
Jessica says
We also get out before Memorial Day and I’m so thankful! I think going to school past Memorial Day is dreadful, haha.

It’s hard to believe it’s Back to School time…we took the two ( still at home) kids shopping this afternoon for a bit. UGH. Everyone else apparently had the same idea LOL
Jessica says
Oh yeah! It was tax free weekend in Texas this past weekend and I wanted nothing to do with any retail store anywhere!

I love breakfast food any time of day! Good luck at your new school. It seems awfully early to be returning though. I definitely love my morning runs. I’m spent mentally and physically by afternoon and that run isn’t going to happen. Plus it’s wicked hot here in the PM.
Jessica says
It is a bit shorter than I’m used to, but that’s the sacrifice I’m making for a new school! I’m thinking of going to super early runs because it gets way too hot here too.

Hi Jessica! With my summer break from blogging, I have missed seeing you in the Weekly Wrap and that is really my misfortune. I am trying to get back on that blogging bus and therefore get caught back up!
You had a great week and I so need to incorporate yoga back into my routine. I used to watch Adriene as well. Isn’t she great and every one really is a good session!
I am a morning runner although I have not been one all along. I just find that if I get it done before I start my day, it’s less likely something will get in the way! Plus more times than not if it’s going to rain in Mississippi, it is going to do it in the afternoons, not the mornings! I look forward to keeping up with you!
Jessica says
So glad you stopped by, Tricia! 😊

Ugh, that early alarm is ROUGH. I totally understand as my alarm goes off at 4:45 most days. I run both mornings and afternoons. I am more likely to not make excuses in the morning though, so that’s my preference. I’ve incorporated running to or from work, so that helps encourage me to finish a run, knowing I need to get to work or that I get to home and relax! Thanks for linking up!
Jessica says
I’m like you–a lot less likely to make excuses in the morning!
