I’m all about easy-peasy hairstyles and I have a handful I tend to stick to. 1. I curl my hair with a wand and leave it down, 2. I pin back one side to get it out of my eyes, 3. I rock the messy bun. In the summer, I especially like the messy bun because it looks more pulled together than a simple ponytail, but it keeps my hair off my neck in the heat. It doesn’t hurt that my husband compliments me every time I wear it either. 😉
In high school, I was dubbed “Queen of the Messy Bun” (and queen of the French braid!) because my friends were always recruiting me to fix their hair before basketball games. I even did my own hair for prom a few times, as well as some friends hair too. They were always begging me to do their messy buns because they assumed they were overly complex. In fact, they’re not–messy buns are so easy and can be done in about three minutes.
Easy Messy Bun for Summer
As long as you have the right products, an easy messy bun can be accomplished very quickly. I grab a wide tooth comb, dry shampoo (if I need it), a handful of bobby pins, and a clear elastic. I get all of these at–where else–Target.

Start by giving my roots a good spray of dry shampoo if you need it. I usually reserve a messy bun for the very last day before I wash my hair, so the dry shampoo is usually necessary. The Not Your Mother’s Plump for Joy smells amazing! Let it sit for a couple of minutes, comb it out, and get to work.

Next, braid the front of your hair with a Dutch braid, which is just an inside out French braid. When doing a Dutch braid, take your middle strand to the outside when adding hair to the strand instead of going underneath to add the hair. Otherwise, it’s exactly the same. Braid almost to the end and then secure it off with a pin. Next, pull, stretch, and loosen the braid. This gives it a more casual look and when you’re satisfied, pin the braid above your ear to hold it in place.

The next step is the actual “messy bun” step. It’s important to remember that it’s a messy bun and it’s not going to be perfect. The easiest method for a messy bun is to grab your hair in one hand as if you’re going to form a ponytail. I like mine low, so I keep it close to the nape of my neck. With your other hand, begin stuffing the other pieces of hair into your fist. Wrap your elastic around the bun–it will probably only go around twice–and tighten as necessary. These clear elastics by Goody are the best I’ve found. I have a lot of hair and even though they’re tiny, they stay tight and hold my hair in place.

Check the back of your head for any strands you might have missed and pin them wherever you think they look good! These ConAir bobby pins are the best ones I’ve found that aren’t “professional.” Hairspray to set the style and then head out the door. It’s really as simple as that. It is rare that I don’t like the end result of a messy bun and have to pull it down to start over. Remember, embrace the mess! That’s what makes it look good. 🙂

It looks cute on you! I have never ever worn a bun in my life haha. My hair doesn’t want to stay in one without me damaging it, and it never looks good. I look like a sloppy mess. I think my ears are too big for buns!
I understand! I always think I look weird in a ponytail, haha.
Cute!!! I love it!
Thank you, thank you!! 🙂
