The fourth week of training for the Energy City Half Marathon has come to an end. Check out the lessons learned and how I’m moving forward.
I find it very hard to believe that here we are at the end of January already! This month has flown by, but I’m mostly ready to bid it adieu. I’m calling February a do-over for the beginning of 2018 and hoping a slow down in the busyness of things. Nevertheless, I got in some activity and I’m recapping it Weekly Wrap style!
Sunday, 1/21/18:
Husband and I made the 90-minute drive to our hometown to check in on my dad. I also had a baby shower to attend where I knew there would be plenty of sweets. I didn’t let the typical “I shouldn’t have ate that” guilt get to me, but I still fit in a short workout when we got home.
Monday, 1/22/18:
No run for the day as I had a staff meeting after school. I never know how long those will last, so I just count on fitting everything in before work. It was a total body day with a focus on booty and surprisingly a good bit of core.

Tuesday, 1/23/18:
AM: It was a day for core with a little bit of cardio mixed in. I never used to be someone who did focused core work — I’ve always just relied on it through total body work. However, I’ve realized how beneficial it is to my running, so I’m making myself do it. But I still hate planks!
PM: Tuesday afternoon’s run was kind of a bust. Pippa wasn’t going to let me out the door without her, but then it turned into one of these runs. Seriously, it was *go.stop.sniff.pee.repeat* every two minutes. I got two phone calls in the middle of my run and things just were not aligning for me. Oh well — I banked 3.5 miles with another quarter-mile walk back to the house.
Wednesday, 1/24/18:
AM: I woke up sore and tired and contemplating skipping my morning workout. Thankfully, what was on the schedule was pretty light (but heavy on the core!) and I was thankful I powered through it.
PM: I got some happy mail the day before in the form of a Garmin Forerunner 35, so I took it out for a 35m. tempo run. I’ve never had a device strictly for running and it was SO NICE to be able to see where I was and what my pace was with just a quick glance.
Thursday, 1/25/18:
Rest day.

Friday, 1/26/18:
I rolled slowly out of bed at my regular 4:20 and did a pretty light total body workout on the Studio Tone It Up App using my mini resistance bands. Well, I say pretty light. After that I tacked on an upper body/core circuit that included 42 burpee tuck jumps. I broke them up throughout the circuit, but I still felt pretty gassed by the end.
Saturday, 1/27/18:
I had another 7-mile long run. I used the virtual pacer feature on my watch in an effort to hold a more consistent pace and I totally did, which I count as a win. I took a slightly different route than last week, which kept things interesting, but I still ended up with the same average pace. I found that pretty interesting. Sometimes I geek over my fitness data. Anyone else?
Week 4 Miles: 13.8 Miles
Total Miles: 46.55 Miles
This week on the blog, I shared some fun things — a mix of beauty, fitness, and life! Check it out if you haven’t yet. On Monday, I posted Best Eyeshadows for Simple Beauty Routines, Wednesday brought 13.1 Things I Learned from a runDisney Race Weekend, and Friday I shared my January favorites with Five Things I Loved in January.
Question: Will February be a “do-over” month for you too?

It took me a while to figure out the Garmin but now I love mine!
Wendy says
I think that you ran consistent paces on different routes is a testament to your training! Consistency is key.

Love your new watch! I never payed much attention to core either than the total body workouts while running, but since I have been taking CX classes I can really tell a difference. Sometimes it even hurts when I laugh the next day. I guess this is a good thing.
Kimberly Hatting says
OMG…those leggings/tights that match your bands!!!! Details…what brand? They are just my style!!
Lisa @ Mile by Mile says
I kind of feel like I need a do-over month as well! January was such a weird month and while it went by quickly, I am also ready for it to be over. I feel like once we get through February we have made it through the long haul of the winter! Great job with your workouts!
Anna @ Piper's Run says
February will be a do over month for me for sure. Getting my hip injury sorted and now a nasty head cold…I’m ready for February.
Kim G says
I agree that this month just flew by. It makes me think that this year is going to go by quickly, just like 2017!
Great week of workouts and training. I love using resistance bands in workouts – really gives a great burn!
Michelle @ Running with Attitude says
Yes I will definitely be counting February as a do-over start to the year! My work schedule’s been crazy this month and then I got sick so my workouts/runs have been all over the place.
Enjoy your Garmin! All of that data can become addictive!
Lesley says
January was a kind of month I needed to get through, and hopefully February will feel better. For the first half, my running was not easy, and I felt rusty, but now it’s coming together. Training starts next month, so I really hope this easy feeling sticks around.
Katie Shepherd says
Wow great mileage for the week! Looks like I will break 100 miles running for this month! It’s been a long time since I’ve been able to do that! I’m hoping February will be just as good as this one has been!
HoHo Runs says
Nice work this week! My eyes over 40 (ok, ok over 50) love the big face on your model of Garmin. It’s very easy to read. There are so many tools at your fingers with a Garmin and the Garmin app. I don’t think I’ve scratched the surface with mine. Thanks for linking.
Elaine D says
I think my next watch will be the Garmin 35 – I still have my old one but I have a feeling it will break soon. Haven’t used the app lately though to look at my data. The virtual pacer sounds awesome – it would be great for tempo runs.
Toni says
Wow, great mileage! I love my Garmin, I have t Fenix…I am loving all the data it provides! February is def gonna be better than January.
Jenn says
Great watch! I love the Garmin products and I know you’ll be happy with it!
I just want to build on my January momentum. Things have been going great and I want to continue with them!
Coco says
Oooh! A new Garmin is always fun. Do you usually workout twice a day? Am/PM?
Andrea says
Lol! Your leggings are adorable. And who wouldn’t want their bands to match their outfit?
Agness of Fit Travelling says
Excellent mileage, Jessica! Keep up the awesome work and continue being so inspiring and motivating. You will rock on that half marathon!
Angela Cardamone @marathonsandmotivation.com says
February will definitely be a “do-over” for me! January was not what I had planned…YIKEs!!!
Kathryn @ Dancing to Running says
January didn’t go quite as I had hoped either, but sometimes we’re met with unexpected obstacles along the way and sometimes there’s no way to avoid them. Here’s to a better February!
Smitha @ FauxRunner says
You will love the Garmin! I have loved all the gadgets I’ve got from Garmin. And excellent customer service too.
