The sixth week of training for the Energy City Half Marathon has come to an end. Check out the lessons learned and how I’m moving forward.

What a week! It was long, but it was fast, and it was full of good workouts. It’s hard to believe I’m halfway through the training cycle for this race. It feels like it’s still forever away. Maybe that’s a good thing? Anyway, catch up Weekly Wrap style and let me know how you stayed active this week!
Sunday, 2/4/18:
Yoga and core was the workout of the day. I wanted to stretch it out, and then I wanted to work my core a little, so that’s exactly what I did.
Monday, 2/5/18:
AM: I woke up at my super early regular time for a leg day. I did so many lunges that by the end I swore off lunges for the rest of the week! There were some deadlifts and squats mixed in too. I was starving for the rest of the day.
PM: After school I fit in a 4-mile run. It felt so hard! My legs felt like lead and I was slower than I wanted to be. By the end of the run, I was kind of regretting my heavy leg day.

Tuesday, 2/6/18:
Tuesday morning I did some upper body and core work with body weight cardio. I love running and always enjoy the solitude of ti, but I also look forward to my run-free workout days. They just bring a different kind of happiness!
Wednesday, 2/7/18:
AM: The Tone It Up Daily Workout and a total body HIIT session was planned for Wednesday morning and that’s exactly what I did!
PM: A 40-minute tempo run was on the schedule for after school and it was a good one. It was cold though and I was somewhat regretting my choice to wear shorts.

Thursday, 2/8/18:
Rest day.
Friday, 2/9/18:
Friday’s workout was a barre style total body. Not my favorite type of workout, but I realized it was actually just what I needed for the day. It was pretty gentle and I knew I didn’t need to do anything too intense with the next day’s run coming up.
Saturday, 2/10/18:
I had a 10K — the Heat & Sole 10K at the local YMCA — on the schedule that was taking place downtown. When I woke up at 6:30, I checked the weather and the temp at start time was going to be 28 degrees with 15 mph winds. WAH! I seriously contemplated not going, but I did anyway. I showed up for packet pick-up about 8:15 and was smacked in the face by the wind. I got my stuff, hopped back in the car, and went home to grab another layer. Silly me for thinking it wouldn’t be “that” bad.
I got back in plenty of time and at 9:08 they sent us off in the freezing cold. There’s not much else to say about this race except that it was more than half a mile short. For some reason, they changed the course at the last minute and 10K did two loops of the 5K instead of the planned route. I could tell when 5K split off at the end of the first loop that it was going to end up short. Oh well. On paper, it appears that I beat my previous 10K time by 7 minutes, ha!
UPDATE: This morning, the results were posted. I was top in my age group! That’s super cool, but I won’t share how many (err, few) were in the age group to begin with. 😉 Perks of small local races, right?
Week 6 Miles: 13.5 Miles
Total Miles: 74.8 Miles
Question: Have you ever ran a race with a short course?

I just ran a 5-mile race that clocked in at 4.61 on my Garmin. My finish time was a good PR (had the race distance actually been the full 5 miles as well). IT’s a 5-mile race I have done several times, but they have changed the course a few times. This course seemed to be the same as in recent years…but obviously there were a few turns that got omitted LOL

I have run a few local races that were short, lol. Most of these races aren’t timed or certified so I guess I should count them more as a fun run!
Wendy says
Congrats on that AG win! No matter how the course measured, you came in first!
Thanks for linking!

Great week of training and congrats on the AG win! I have run a few races that were short. While it’s kind of a bummer, I also love having a race over before I expect it to be. haha!
Deborah @ Confessions of mother runner says
Most of the races I run ended up being slightly longer than the advertised length. People are so uptight about that around here! Good for you for going home and coming back to race.

Half a mile short – wow! I’m not used to running in the cold so I would have probably bailed out if I knew it was going to be windy too but you didn’t and even finished on top in your AG – CONGRATS!
Anna @ Piper's Run says
Running in shorts, jealous! Congrats your race!
Lacey@fairytalesandfitness says
Great week of training ! Awesome job at your race! One perk for having a race close to where you live, you can run home quick!
Smitha @ FauxRunner says
Congrats on the AG! You raced what was given and won fair and square!

I run short and long (like longer than not running the tangents correctly) races. Last year I had a half marathon that measured short. I was on pace for a great PR until I fell apart at mile 11. I also paced a 5k that was long last summer. I felt so bad for the runners…..even sprinting at the end, I came in behind goal time. But anyway great job with your 10k! It’s always fun to come in 1st AG
Coco says
If it’s a goal race, a short course can be frustrating. A few years ago the Cherry Blossom course had to be reconfigured and shortened at the last minute because of an accident on the road, but they announced that in advance. Great job on the AG regardless!
Kathryn @ Dancing to Running says
Running a race with a short course is definitely frustrating. DId the organizers offer an explanation for the short course? Did they even acknowledge it? I ran a Biggest Loser race that had a slightly too short course (it was a 10k race) and they refused to accept their fault, thus I will not be running with them again.

I love that you were able to get to the race, go home and be back on time! That’s awesome!
I’ve run a few short courses. It’s super frustrating because those are usually PRs, but they are tough to beat because distance was missing. It happens, but I wish they would be more careful.
Congratulations on your AG win!

Wow! Congratulations on the age group win, so exciting!! Ps-I love those tights with the flowers!!
Hannah says
I tend to assume the race distance won’t be exactly accurate unless the description says it’s a certified course. Half a mile is a big difference though!
HoHo Runs says
Congrats on your age group placement! Courses that are too short or too long can be frustrating. But, at least we can take comfort in the fact everyone at the race ran the same distance. Those are really cute tights you are wearing. Thanks for linking!
Karen Bayne says
ha! Never regret a heavy leg day 🙂 It will pay off later! I feel ya though it is so hard when your legs feel fatigued and you are trying to run lol
Congrats on the 10K! I have run a few that were short and it really irked me because I trained and was trying for a time…I swear I would rather run long lol
