Planning the Perfect Summer Travel-Fitness Adventure
Even though spring is still weeks away, it’s never too early to plan your summer vacation. Though you’ll likely picture yourself relaxing on the beach with some ice cream and a guilty pleasure novel, it’s important to maintain your health during the warmer months. It’s all too easy to drop your routine without the structure of the school day to keep you on track. And if you’re traveling, foregoing your fitness plans feels almost inevitable.
Keep yourself on track for success by forming your vacation plans around staying healthy. Integrate physical activity and healthy choices into the heart of your travel plans so you don’t lose any progress during your summer break. Here are a few ideas to incorporate travel into your fitness plans this summer:
Bike Tour
Leave the car at home, strap on your helmet, and go on a bike tour. If you’re new to long distance biking, a day ride may be best while you build stamina, but if you’re looking to push your limits, you can go on a multi-day or multi-week excursion.
Bike tours are flexible and customizable, so you can tailor your ride to suit your needs. You can go for a local ride or travel internationally; camp at night or stay in luxurious hotels; go with a guide, group, or on your own; ride 10 miles total or 60 per day — it all depends on what you want. No matter what you decide to do, a bike tour is an exciting way to prioritize your health during the summer.

Yoga Retreat
If you need a break from the gym, consider a yoga retreat. You can use this as a chance to recover and regroup after the school year. There are different retreats all over the world for you to choose from; you’re sure to find one that practices your preferred style of yoga. Depending on the schedule, you may have time to do some sightseeing, go for a run, or just a quick cardio workout in between sessions.
Camping
Camping is a classic summertime favorite for a reason. Not only do you get to immerse yourself in nature, but there are an abundance of ways to stay active at your favorite campsite. Day hikes, swimming, kayaking, or tossing a Frisbee with a friend will keep you occupied and on your feet during your trip. Be sure to polish off your day with a s’more!
Medical Tourism
Going to the doctor is a major part of staying fit and healthy. And if you, your significant other, or a family member needs to see a specialist or have a procedure done that would have been too time-consuming during the school year, you can build your trip around seeing a doctor. Though it might not be the most glamorous vacation, medical tourism is a great way to get more affordable or specialized healthcare while getting to know a new place, whether that’s in the United States or another part of the world.

A Marathon
Training for a marathon or half marathon is a great way to hold yourself accountable and have a goal to strive for during the summer. And if you want to take a trip, why not sign up for a destination marathon? Whether you want to visit your family or explore a new place, your fitness won’t suffer as a result of your travels.
Just remember to be careful about running in the summer heat, especially in a new environment. Bring the right gear and be sure to carefully monitor your progress. Use health apps and wearable technology to keep you healthy; use them to track your mileage and water intake while you run.
However and wherever you decide to stay active and healthy this summer, don’t forget to have fun! Whether you decide to try something new or push yourself to harder than ever, always be sure to enjoy yourself and do what’s best for your health.
