Synergistic fitness means finding balance–the unicorn we all try to reach! It may seem impossible, but it’s an important habit of longterm health.

I have been looking forward to this installment of the Habits of Longterm Health series since the very first post! Truthfully, that’s probably because it’s my favorite area–fitness. And synergistic fitness at that! What does that mean? Before we dive in, let’s do a quick review, or check out the other habits here!
Habits of Longterm Health Review
Habits are formed by following behaviors until they become almost voluntary. Embrace taking things one day at a time and build on your progress as habits develop.
Synergistic Fitness
Synergistic–what does that even mean? Well, synergy means to work together. To put it simply, your fitness routine should work with your lifestyle, not against it. I think it’s so important to find some kind of fitness routine and movement that you LOVE, but at the same time, it should have balance.

Having a mixed fitness program can help reduce your risk for injury and deter boredom. Training can come in a number of formats including strength, speed, endurance, and mobility. A truly synergistic fitness program will regularly hit all four of these components. (But balance is a unicorn right?!😜)
Fitting in the different components doesn’t have to be difficult, but it may take some finesse with scheduling, especially if you’re training for a race or preparing for another type of competition. Even just one day a week of a different type of training can do wonders.

Your fitness routine should also keep you excited and motivated. If you find yourself bored with the same-ole same-ole, that could be a sign that it’s time to incorporate a different modality. And don’t ever, ever neglect REST! Rest is a huge part of a synergistic fitness program. Rest helps you avoid burnout and injury and gives you the energy to kill it at your next workout.
Personally, I try to strength train 3-4 days per week, do at least one HIIT or speed workout, one endurance workout, and one day of yoga each week. How do you practice synergistic fitness?
